This month the EtsyMetal Team is writing about our summer plans.

Summer marks the start of the concert season here in New Mexico. Concerts are something we do as a family. I usually grab tickets as soon as they go on sale. So far I have tickets to see Rob Zombie with Five Finger Death Punch and Alice Cooper with Marilyn Manson. I look forward to seeing these bands as they do not come to NM very often. We like a wide variety of music to include heavy-Metal, country, hip hop and old-school Rock.

the Scorpions Godsmack ~ 2012 ABQ

I’ll be working on improving my chicken coop with protective fencing so that they can stay in one area safely. We have preditors such as coyotes, hawks, owls and raccoons (they eat eggs and baby chicks).  The horse pen needs some re-vamping as well. Oh so much to do!

And… of course I will be making new jewelry which I so look forward to!

Author: Stieg Larsson

This book takes place in Sweden (originally written in Swedish). It is a very complex book with a lot of characters, twists and turns. The story, or at least part of it, is a mystery centered around the disappearance of a young girl in one of Sweden’s wealthiest families (a cold case which happened 40 years ago).  The book is really rich in detail with a quick pace. As you may have guessed, one of the main characters has a dragon tattoo. Lisbeth Salander is a young woman who has led a rather mysterious and interesting life. You find out more about her as the story goes on. I don’t want to say too much and give it away. It is such a pleasure to read and be surprised by the next bit of information. I really enjoyed this book. It is really well written with few paragraphs of filler. I could barely put it down. It left me eager to read the next book in the trilogy. All of the names of people, cities and streets are Swedish. That is the only thing I had a hard time with as unfamiliar names are hard for me to remember. But well worth the time to read!

BOTTOM LINE

Starts (1 to 5)    5-Stars!!

I highly recommend this book especially if you like myteries

Corrales Bosque Fire

July 23, 2012

Last month there was a big fire in the Bosque  which is the preserved land adjacent the Rio Grande river. Fire officials think it may have been  started by an electric (fake) cigarette.  They just opened the Bosque up so I took my mountain bike back there and shot some pictures. The bike path is still there although now you have to go around a few downed trees.

Book Title : Big Stone Gap: A Novel

Author : Adriana Trigiani

Big Stone Gap takes place in Virginia, in the small Appalachian town of the title’s name. First off let me just say that I will review this book from a biased position as my parents grew up in Big Stone and this book stirs up some of my best childhood memories. The places and activities that occur in this book are real and I so clearly remember nearly every one of them.

If you are in the mood for a pleasant, upbeat and very well written story, this is a great read for you. The characters are well-developed and they quickly become your friends and acquaintances. The story has a lot of humor and down to earth small town quality.  Although it is not a “gripping drama” story, I found myself looking forward to every word. This is a heart-warming and  inspiring story that touches your heart.

This is book-1 of a trilogy. I will most definitely add the next two books to my “To-Read” list.

BOTTOM LINE:

Stars (1-5)   5-Stars

I highly recommend this book

The Banjo

July 12, 2012

I made a metal banjo for a young girl who has a passion for playing her banjo. Made of copper and sterling silver with an oxidized patinae.

I am seriously thinking of starting a “Rock Star” line of metal instruments.

What’s for Dinner?

July 10, 2012

This is one of my favorite dinners! Very simple and nutritious.

Fresh wild caught salmon seasoned with garlic, lemon pepper and dill

Lightly steamed organic broccoli

Fresh sliced organic tomato

A squeeze of fresh lemon all over everything!

Book Title : The Help

Author : Kathryn Stockett

The Help takes place in the early 1960s, Jackson Mississippi during the Civil Rights Movement.  A young white woman, who has just returned from college, comes home to Mississippi. She becomes interested in what the maids, working for white families, have to say about their situations, experiences and lives. She risks everything to persue these women’s stories.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. It grips you to the core and you just can barely put it down. Three of the main characters narrate their chapters in their own distinctive voices. The characters are well developed and there is never a dull moment in this book. The story is beautiful and true to the period.

A movie was made based on The Help (with the same name). I watched it and really loved the movie as well. Of course, as with all movies based on books, some of the detail was left out. But, it was really well done and stayed true to the story line.

BOTTOM LINE:

Stars  – 5-Stars

I highly recommend this book and the movie!!

Welcome to our EtsyMetal monthly Blog Carnival!
Blog Carnival is about a group of our members sharing their experience on a common topic.
This month’s Topic: “What In The World Are You Doing?”
Well now, that’s a loaded question! About 4 months ago I started CrossFit. It is an absolutely amazing, all around fit workout program. Also the sort of workout that leaves you completely exhausted, on the floor shaking at the end of the hour!!  When I first started I could not do one pushup or one pull up. Now I am able to do LOTS of those and so much more. Along with art, it is my passion.
I will share with you a bit about what I have got on my bench right this minute.
My first priority is to make a “Banjo” pendant for a young girl who has been inspired by music and has larned to play the banjo and LOVES it! I have it on paper and ready to cut the metal.
Next in the que is two of my Vial Pendants. One will contain natural Sleeping Beauty turquoise chips with a large white pearl bezel set on the top. The other will be filled with teeny, tiny watch parts for a very industrial look. I am not sure what I’ll embellish the top with yet but I am thinking of either a watch gear or a faceted stone.
I have some ideas for earrrings. My etsy shop is sorely lacking in earrings and I want to make a few Pairs of bold metal sets. I’ve got the materials and the designs I just need to put my hands into action.

Creating New Blog

June 24, 2012

Welcome to my new blog!

I decided to abandon the other one as I made some changes which prevented me from logging on to it. It was just easier to start from scratch.

I will have this one up and running very soon.

Thanks so much for reading, following and hanging in there with me,

Rebecca
