Book Review ~ The Help

July 4, 2012

Book Title : The Help

Author : Kathryn Stockett

The Help takes place in the early 1960s, Jackson Mississippi during the Civil Rights Movement.  A young white woman, who has just returned from college, comes home to Mississippi. She becomes interested in what the maids, working for white families, have to say about their situations, experiences and lives. She risks everything to persue these women’s stories.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. It grips you to the core and you just can barely put it down. Three of the main characters narrate their chapters in their own distinctive voices. The characters are well developed and there is never a dull moment in this book. The story is beautiful and true to the period.

A movie was made based on The Help (with the same name). I watched it and really loved the movie as well. Of course, as with all movies based on books, some of the detail was left out. But, it was really well done and stayed true to the story line.

BOTTOM LINE:

Stars  – 5-Stars

I highly recommend this book and the movie!!
